Jackie Brown
An avid knitter and lifetime crafter
When I was a child, a friend of our family offered to give me "knitting lessons"! I loved those lessons, but I was only able to knit headbands which were the only objective at the time.
After this iconic fashion phase was over, I did not pick up needles again until I reached age 27, married with two little girls. I began with a child’s sweater. I purchased a simple pattern and yarn and I never looked back. Although, my garments where limited to children, I was able to expand my knitting knowledge with harder and more complicated patterns.
It wasn’t until 16 years later, that I finally made a garment for myself. I purchased a pattern and yarn from the nearby factory, Conshohocken Yarn Company, and begin working on a sweater and skirt outfit. The sweater pattern was a cable leaf and bobbles with a matching hat and a knitted skirt. I searched the phone directory and found a local yarn store that would machine knit the skirt for me.
The owner of the shop and I became great friends. Almost every Saturday, I would hang out at the shop. I would meet the customers, discuss ideas and make suggestions. During these times, I would assist those who needed help with their knitting projects. The owner began to teach me about gauge, measurements, design, and patterns. My first designer garment would have sold for $300.00 if I sought to give it up.
My passion for knitting continued to grow. I began exploring the idea of opening a yarn store and thought that I needed to gain more knitting experience. I joined the Knitting Guild of America and started attending meeting regularly at a local chapter. I successfully completed Level I and Level II of the Master Knitting Program. As this love relationship continued to evolve, it took on various outlets.
In 2014, I am a Craft Yarn Council’s Certified Knitting & Crochet Instructor. To supplement my knitting training by attending Stitches East, Vogue Knitting Live (NY), and TKGA Conferences. As an Instructor, I have taught classes at Pottstown’s Annual Knit Out and Knitters' Day Out. Published review in June 2019, TKGA’s K2Tog Newsletter. I have also worked and taught classes in my local yarn shops; such as Yarnings (until their closing in 2020) and Purls of Wisdom.
